Entry gate; with or without a wicket?

Fence

The fence and the entrance gate to the property are important design elements. They complete the architecture of the building, influence the overall appearance and, finally, our everyday comfort in life. They also increase the level of security of property and household members, as they constitute an additional barrier. Therefore, when deciding which fence and gate to choose, it is worth considering each element. Entrance gate – with or without a wicket? This is one of the questions that should be asked at the fencing design stage.

Usually, when planning a fence, apart from the general vision, style and colour, we first think about the entrance gate. It occupies a large area, it is a movable element of the fence, so it should have certain parameters so that later operation would not be a problem.

The area we have at our disposal is of great importance. In the case of some plots, the installation of a hinged gate (with traditionally opening wings) is unfortunately not necessary, because the driveway to the building is simply too small. Then the solution is a sliding variant that saves space on the property. At the same time, space along the fence is required – so that the sash can hide without colliding with other elements of the terrain (posts, trees, garbage can, etc.). Comfortable opening of the gate is ensured by the applied automation. We can control the gate with a remote control or using solutions for a smart home – through an application on the phone or a panel in the interior.

Wicket to match

Is the wicket a necessary element? It depends – on the investor's preferences, his needs, and sometimes – the spatial possibilities of the plot. If it is very small, there may simply not be enough space to install a wicket. However, if the size of the site allows its installation, it is worth considering it at the design stage, because a later change of concept will be more complicated to implement and will require additional costs. The design of a fence with a wicket must also include an electrical installation on the post adjacent to it, so that the system can release the electric strike when we want to open the sash, e.g. with a videophone.

Entrance gate with or without a wicket?

It may seem that an entrance gate is enough to freely enter the property, e.g. if the householders move mainly by car and thus cross the plot border. In other cases, the sash is simply opened to the width of the gate and the gate will act as a "substitute" for it. Consider whether this solution will work in the long term and in any situation. Children that we take to kindergarten or school at the moment will be more independent in some time – using the wicket will be much easier and safer for them. If we often have guests who park outside the property, the gate is also more convenient than opening the gate sash each time and keeping an eye on it - is it really closed behind the people who entered the house. The installation of the wicket also means less use of the gate, which does not have to be opened by several dozen centimetres each time we want to leave or get onto the property. Which in the long run may turn out to be a significant saving.
